"The Power of the Drum" by IRIE! Drummers

The IRIE! Drummers will be launching a new musical performance at Moonshot Centre called “The Power of the Drum“.  The new performance featuring African and Caribbean Drumming will take place at 7:30pm on Saturday 20 October 2012.

IRIE! Drummers are a collective of five (5) talented drummers from Africa, the Caribbean and the UK. The musicians work with IRIE! dance theatre using the idiom of traditional African and traditional Caribbean drum rhythms as a basis upon which to create, perform, educate and entertain.

The Power of the Drum is a collection of traditional African, Caribbean and creative rhythms influenced by cultural, social and ritual encounters and experiences.

There are numerous styles of African & Caribbean drumming, which come form different geographical locations, and cultural practices. It is the cultural mix and sharing of common dialogue and exchanges, that have influenced and ignited the passion of the IRIE! drummers to continue the progression of these rhythms in the UK.

The Power of the Drum will take you on an uplifting musical journey with the infectious sounds of the drums, percussion and voices that celebrate both traditional and contemporary vibrations of Cameroon, Jamaica, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone; through call and response, counter-rhythms, polyrhythms and improvisation.
